THE PLATFORM

The Formation is an intellectual platform on women’s structural literacy, economic agency and public authority. It begins from a simple argument: many women have not lacked encouragement. They have lacked formation — the intellectual, financial, psychological, relational and strategic preparation required to move through the world as it actually is. The Formation examines what women are taught to endure, what they are praised for carrying, and what they are rarely equipped to understand, own or change. It is not self-help, therapy or reassurance. It is a practice of preparation. One essay. One argument. One practice. Every week.

THE FOUNDER

Renata Diffley is the founder of The Formation. She trained as a designer at Parsons in New York, worked in fashion in her earlier life, built an atelier, and later worked inside family businesses in law and finance. Those environments shaped her interest in institutions: how they are built, who they serve, and who they leave outside. Her work brings together economics, philosophy, psychology, systems thinking and lived observation to examine the structures that shape women’s lives — and what it takes to move through them with greater judgment and freedom. She lives in London.

THE work

The Formation is published in essay series — a long-form intellectual curriculum across ten series and fifty essays. Series One, The World As It Is, begins with the structures women inherit before turning to the formation they must build: clarity, agency, discernment, ownership and freedom.
